Pass Requirements

PROGRESSION AND PROMOTION GUIDELINES

These guidelines are set by the National Basic Education Department as part of the CAPS Curriculum.

FOUNDATION PHASE (GRADE R)

 Home Language: Adequate Achievement (Level 4)

 Mathematics: Moderate Achievement (Level 3)

FOUNDATION PHASE (GRADES 1-3)

 Home Language: Adequate Achievement (Level 4) OR

 First Additional Language: Moderate Achievement (Level 3)

 Mathematics: Moderate Achievement (Level 3)

 

INTERMEDIATE PHASE (GRADES 4-6)

 Home Language: Adequate Achievement (Level 4)

 First Additional Language: Moderate Achievement (Level 3)

 Mathematics: Moderate Achievement (Level 3)

 Any other two (2) of the remaining approved subjects: Moderate Achievement (Level 3)

SENIOR PHASE (GRADES 7-9)

 Home Language: Adequate Achievement (Level 4)

 First Additional Language: Moderate Achievement (Level 3) or an Elementary Achievement

(Level 2) for the second required Language if that language is the language of learning and

teaching (LoLT)

 Mathematics: Moderate Achievement (Level 3)

 Any other three (3) of the remaining approved subjects: Moderate Achievement (Level 3)

 An Elementary Achievement (Level 2) in any two (2) of the other required subjects

7 Outstanding Achievement 80 – 100%

6 Meritorious Achievement 70 – 79%

5 Substantial Achievement 60 – 69%

4 Adequate Achievement 50 – 59%

3 Moderate Achievement 40 – 49%

2 Elementary Achievement 30 – 39%

1 Not Achieved 0 – 29%
